Welcome to Aviva de Groot’s irregular journal. I work as a legal researcher on intersections of humans, justice, and technology. My interests especially concern the governance of decisional powers, the justice of knowledge practices that inform decisions, and how decisions are explained in light of this.

Years of professional experience in the legal aid field gave me a thorough appreciation of the complex ways in which citizens’ ‘administrative truths’ are produced. The interplay of law, policy, politics, and technology inspired the need to engage on all levels. And, necessarily, creativity.

Other engagements include investigations of social robot developments, earlier work in multi-disciplinary privacy studies, and a previous career in the art department of filmmaking. I entered that world with a degree in cabinet making. To start an intellectual career without proper knowledge of how things work seemed simply irresponsible.

It’s the how-to’s and the why’s that trigger me. My general curiosity, interest in process, and penchant for detail are tied up with a strong sense of social responsibility. The dynamics of learning, doing, and being of use to others.

I’ve started these pages to record, and report, some occupational thoughts and activities. There’s journal entries on my past PhD research at TILT, on the letter A, and previews of entries that will appear in full once I’ve rebuttoned their shirts.

Hallo! Wees welkom. Als onderzoeker houd ik me bezig met onderwerpen op kruispunten van mens, rechtvaardigheid en techniek. Op deze pagina’s doe ik onregelmatig verslag van mijn bezigheden en beslommeringen. Ik werk momenteel in een internationaal veld, met internationale collega’s. De voertaal is Engels, maar op deze pagina’s publiceer ik af en toe ook in mijn moerstaal.
